Saint Benedict Double Faced Ring
St. Benedict Double Faced rotating ring.
In the front of the medal is St. Benedict with a cross in his right hand, the Christian symbol of salvation, and on the left his monastic rule. On Benedict’s right hand, under the cross, there is a poisoned cup, a mention to the legend according to which hostile monks tried to poison him and the cup containing poisoned wine shattered when the saint made the sign of the cross on it. On his left, under the rule, there is a crow carrying away a loaf of poisoned bread. From this comes the tradition that the medal protects against poisoning.
Above the cup and the crow are the words CRUX SANCTI PATRIS BENEDICTI “The cross of the Holy Father Benedict”. Around the figure of St. Benedict are the words EIUS IN OBITU NRO PRAESENTIA MUNIAMUR “May we be strengthened by his presence in the hour of our death,” as the Benedictines considered him a particular protector for a happy death.
Second face on the cross, containing the letters C S M L – N D S M D, initials of the words Crux sacra sit mihi lux – Numquam draco sit mihi dux “May the holy cross be my light! May the devil never be my lord!”. The large C S P B stands for Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti. “The cross of [our] Holy Father Benedict.” Around the back of the medal are the letters V R S N S M V – S M Q L I V B, referring to Vade retro Satana – Numquam suade mihi vana – Sunt mala quae libas – Ipse venena bibas “Back off Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself!”. And lastly, at the top is the word PAX which means “peace”.
